BATIKFLOW shows how Product Design Engineering students combine design, engineering, ergonomics, and sustainability to respond to a real problem.

INFAIR 2026 Product Design Competition - 1st Place: Doa Ibu

Four students from Product Design Engineering (PDE), BINUS ASO School of Engineering won 1st Place in the Product Design Competition at Industrial Fair (INFAIR) 2026 through their project, BATIKFLOW.

The team consists of:

Jesslyn Trixie Wijaya Felicia Angelika Jayata
Sharon Christanberny Wie Mario Nathaniel Perangin Angin

Their idea started from something close to Indonesia's everyday culture: batik. While batik continues to grow and reach wider markets, many traditional batik artisans still work with facilities that have not been designed around their posture, movement, and daily working process.

 BATIKFLOW: Designing Around the Artisan

BATIKFLOW - an integrated ergonomic workstation for traditional batik work.

From this problem, the team developed BATIKFLOW, an integrated ergonomic workstation for traditional batik artisans. The system combines an ergonomic chair, an adjustable gawangan, and a table for heating batik wax in one working setup.

What makes the project interesting is that the students did not approach it only from the appearance of the product. They considered anthropometric data, ergonomics, working posture, workflow, safety, materials, and manufacturability as part of the design process. BATIKFLOW also explores the use of upcycled engineered bamboo composite, giving bamboo waste a second use as material for the workstation. This brings sustainability into the project without leaving behind the needs of the people who will actually use the product.

Connecting Product Design with Sustainable Development

BATIKFLOW also reflects a broader approach to sustainable product development. By focusing on safer and more ergonomic working conditions, the project supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. At the same time, a better working environment can contribute to artisan well-being and productivity, which connects with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. The use of upcycled materials and a more responsible approach to product development also brings the project in line with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

BATIKFLOW frames its impact through People, Planet, and Profit.

For PDE students, projects like BATIKFLOW are an opportunity to bring together design, engineering, manufacturing, ergonomics, and problem solving to respond to real needs.

Winning INFAIR 2026 is a proud achievement, but more importantly, it shows how an idea developed in the learning process can grow into a solution with relevance beyond the classroom.

Congratulations to the BATIKFLOW team on this achievement!
