International Recognition as Gold Winner of Asia Design Prize (ADP) Award 2021
Christiansen Megumi Kanta, S.T. is the alumni of Product Design Engineering (PDE) Program, BINUS ASO School of Engineering (BASE), BINUS University. He has achieved great performance as Gold Winner of Asia Design Prize (ADP) Award 2021, through his design concept, known as Liberox; as he has outperformed 3187 participants, representing 36 countries from around the world. The selections in ADP Award 2021 are conducted by worldwide high profiles of 45 Judges, representing 9 countries.
Details and Description of Liberox
The aforementioned Liberox provides a value added through its offer vis-à-vis creative, pleasant and smarter way for children to play and tidy up their toys and other belongings. The Liberox is the storage box that can be expanded into a flat mat, in which the children just merely need to fold back in order to put those toys and other belongings together. Due to its practical mechanism through foldable structure; the adults, in particular children’s parents are able to save time to clean up and to benefit it toward wide range of daily life usage.
In term of mechanism, Liberox adopts a folding mechanism which makes it flexible to expand when children want to play with their toys. When used, Children are merely need to open the snap clip and unfold it to form a flat sheet. When they are done playing, they only need to pull the corners to fold them inward, such as folding origami paper, snapping clips, and closing them. To help children figure out how to fold, neodymium magnets are used. This way, the magnets will repel each other when the kids fold in the wrong direction, and they will attract each other when they fold properly.
Furthermore, Liberox consider sustainability perspectives in design process of environmentally friendly. All Liberox materials are recyclable which means they are environmentally friendly. With modern technology, polyester fabrics can be recycled into polyester resin which is the raw material. First, the polyester fabric will be depolymerized to obtain BHET (Polyester monomer). Furthermore, BHET purification will be carried out to remove unwanted substances. Finally, the purified BHET will be polymerized to obtain a polyester resin. Polyester resins can be used to make other polyester products. In addition, this method results in polyester reducing carbon dioxide by 55% compared to the conventional derivative method.
Another material used is cardboard which can be recycled by nature. First, the cardboard goes through a crushing and peeling process to break up the paperboard fibers into small pieces. After the material is shredded into pieces, it is mixed with water and chemicals to break down the paper fibers into a pulp. The next process is contamination filtering to remove any impurities such as tape or glue. Finally, the cleaned slurry is mixed with the new ingredients and dried on a flat surface. This is assumed to go through an automatic pressing machine to remove excess water and turn it into solid sheets called linerboards. These will be glued layer by layer to make a new sheet of cardboard.
As for the magnets that function as vital to the mechanism, they can last very long, as long as they are not exposed to intense heat. By recycling all materials, the product life cycle involves minimal damage to the environment and industrial waste.
