Attending Indonesia International Motor Show 2023, BINUS ASO Showcases Electric Car Prototype
BINUS ASO student team or D'BASE Team enliven the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2023 by showcasing an electric car prototype.
Currently, Indonesia Government is making energy transition efforts in order to maintain energy and create a green economy in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the green economy is expected to significantly reduce environmental risks and resource scarcity. During the G20 Presidency last year, the Government also made a number of investments in the energy sector and financing cooperation.
This energy transition is an effort as well as the Government's commitment to anticipate future energy crises, and the Government has increased the mix of New and Renewable Energy (EBT) sources by 23% in 2025, up to 31% in 2030.
One example of the efforts made by the government is to encourage the formation of an electric-powered vehicle ecosystem. Given the country's automotive industry continues to experience development.
D’BASE Team at IIMS 2023
Based on this, in order to support the government's energy transition to electric vehicles, BINUS ASO School of Engineering participated in the IIMS 2023 event which was held at JIEXPO Kemayoran from 16 to 26 February 2023.
As a form of BINUS' collaboration with the largest automotive event in Indonesia, the BINUS ASO student team or D'BASE Team enliven the event by showing an electric-powered prototype car. This prototype was deliberately chosen to represent BINUS ASO at IIMS 2023 because it had made an achievement at the 2022 Eco-Shell Tournament at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit.
Besides that, IIMS 2023 also has a new EV Area this year, where this area is devoted to electric vehicles in Indonesia, as well as presenting a special test drive track with electric motorbikes. A prototype car that uses electric battery power made by BINUS ASO School of Engineering students will be on display in the area.
The D'BASE Team, which consists of students majoring in Automotive Engineering from BINUS ASO, has made two prototype cars since its establishment in 2020. The two prototypes are cars with urban concepts that use gasoline and electric battery-powered cars. For BINUS, IIMS 2023 is the best event to introduce young Indonesian innovations in the automotive sector by presenting electric-powered prototype cars. The reason is, this event is always attended by hundreds of thousands of public visitors and automotive industry observers from year to year.
The success of the BINUS ASO Student Team in Mandalika
The vehicle that will be displayed to enliven the IIMS 2023 event is not just any electric car. This is because the prototype car from the BINUS ASO student team managed to score an astonishing achievement at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara in 2022.
At the end of the Eco-Shell Tournament held at the circuit, the electric car from the BINUS student team recorded an efficiency of 224 km/kWh. Their car also managed to occupy the top five positions in reaching the finish line for the category of battery-powered or electric cars.
"The D'BASE Team's victory proves that Indonesian students also have the potential to develop environmentally friendly vehicles to compete with other countries," said Prof. Fergyanto E. Gunawan, Dr. Eng who serves as the Dean of the BINUS ASO School of Engineering. After that, he also said, "This opportunity to collaborate with IIMS 2023 is also an honor for BINUS ASO to show the work of its outstanding students."
Ready to Face the Latest Trends in the Automotive Industry
The automotive industry is an industry that is constantly evolving with the changing times. Therefore, there are always the latest trends that appear every year. Some of the trends that are the main focus at IIMS 2023 are the use of data, Internet of Things (IoT) technology, and electrification.
The trend of electrification or motor vehicles that use electric fuel is attracting more and more attention from both automotive industry observers and ordinary people. This popularity is due to increasing public awareness of the negative effects of climate change and the commitment to reduce the world's carbon footprint from global leaders. One of the most frequently relied-on environmental-saving initiatives is eco-friendly transportation.
BINUS ASO School of Engineering realizes the importance of this so that its students are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to support the performance of the automotive and engineering industries.
One of the efforts that have been made by BINUS ASO is to form a team like D'BASE in order to support students' interests and talents in the field of motor vehicle manufacturing.
"We always emphasize the importance of understanding trends and moving based on (developments)," said Prof. Fergyanto E. Gunawan when explaining the role of the development of the latest trends from the automotive world in the learning curriculum. He also added why electrification is the main focus of this collaboration event, "Demand for electric vehicles will increase, so they must know the ins and outs so that our country is not left behind."
