Product Design Engineering on Additive Manufacturing-Perspectives
Deloitte Consulting has embarked in recent year’s articles, published in last 2015 including in 2019 onward publication, and has indicated that most manufacturers are merely commencing to realize Additive Manufacturing (AM)’s full potential as a provision of operational freedom enabling liberation of design and final production.
AM commences replacing traditional manufacturing. Subsequently, it introduces wide-ranging design freedom by reducing some constraints typically imposed by consideration for manufacturability and assembly.

3D opportunity for product design: Additive manufacturing and the early stage
Referring to the above figure on Path I: Stasis, several companies are leaving the “stasis” quadrant and reaping two fundamental benefits of AM-enabled Digitally Optimal Design (DOD) as simplified manufacturing and reduced design constraints.
Deloitte consulting has elaborated structured approach to contemplate about how AM is suitable not only within the business, but also can help to contextualize these nuances and identify the impact of AM in various activities and paths to value. In broader perspective, the technology’s twofold impact encompasses rapid prototyping (RP) and the more emergent concept of digitally optimal design (DOD).
The mentioned structured approach and emergent concept are depicted in the following figures in two articles. The first one is pertaining: Comparison of non-AM, RP, and DOD product design and development processes. Subsequently, the second one is pertaining: Rapid prototyping can produce AM outputs for four distinct purposes.
