My Experience with ICTIM 2026<\/span><\/h1>\n

Participating in academic conferences has consistently been one of the most enriching milestones of my university journey. Beyond serving as a platform to share research findings, these gatherings act as vibrant spaces where scientists, industry experts, and scholars come together to exchange ideas, discover new perspectives, and explore data-driven solutions for real-world operational challenges.<\/p>\n

Stepping Into ICTIM 2026<\/span><\/h3>\n

Organized by BINUS Online, The International Conference on Technology, Innovation and Management (ICTIM 2026) was held virtually from August 4\u20135, 2026. The conference brought together researchers under the theme \u201cScaling Global Value: Integrating AI and Data-Driven Excellence in Technology and Business.\" It was a theme that deeply resonated with my own prior study in using computational modeling and data analytics to streamline complex service systems.<\/p>\n

Through this opportunity, I had the privilege to become the first author and presenter of my research paper entitled \u201cEvaluating Outpatient Clinic Performance Under Resource, Queue, and Arrival Configurations Using Discrete-Event Simulation.\u201d<\/p>\n

What My Paper Explored<\/span><\/h3>\n

Outpatient healthcare clinics frequently face severe operational bottlenecks, including long patient waiting times, crowded waiting rooms, and uneven staff utilization. Commonly, healthcare workflows involve interdependent stages, starting from registration and general check-ups to doctor consultations, pharmacy, and cashier payments. This flow means that a delay at any single step can quickly cascade through the entire clinic system.<\/p>\n

Using real-world patient data gathered through on-site observations and developed using the simmer package in R, the study evaluated several operational intervention strategies under consistent baseline conditions:<\/p>\n

  • Baseline Condition:<\/strong> A single-server model per stage where consultation acts as the primary system bottleneck<\/li>\n
  • Capacity Expansion (Added Doctor):<\/strong> Adding a second doctor with a pooled queue reduced the average total system time dramatically.<\/li>\n
  • Resource Flexibility (Cross-Trained Staff):<\/strong> Allowing clinical staff to perform both general check-ups and doctor consultations achieved a comparable system time without needing to hire additional staff.<\/li>\n
  • Variability Management (Arrival Smoothing):<\/strong> Regulating patient arrivals through deterministic interarrival scheduling reduced congestion significantly, achieving the target doctor utilization rate and reducing mean system time without added service capacity.<\/li>\n
  • Queue Structure Redesign (Multiple Queues):<\/strong> Replacing a pooled queue with separate queues for each doctor led to imbalance and higher wait times, emphasizing the mathematical superiority of pooled queueing structures in healthcare systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    A Personal Milestone: Receiving the Third Best Paper Award<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Having submitted papers and attended several academic conferences prior to ICTIM 2026, I know firsthand how competitive and demanding scholarly reviews can be. Just like all the various prior submission processes and presentation experiences, it has always been an honor for me to be standing before an international audience in different conferences and sharing different knowledges and ideas with all these awesome people!<\/p>\n

    However, the highlight of my experience participating in ICTIM 2026 came during the closing ceremony, when my paper was officially announced as the Third Best Paper Award recipient! Receiving this award was something I truly did not expect. Although it may not be the first place, being recognized among so many insightful and high-caliber papers from international researchers was such a humbling moment and a deeply valuable achievement that I am incredibly proud of. It served as a powerful validation of all the time spent collecting data, refining simulation scripts, analyzing queue dynamics, and writing the manuscript.<\/p>\n

    Learning from Others and Expanding Horizons<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Additionally, another enriching aspects of joining conferences, like ICTIM 2026, was the opportunity to listen to other scholars present their research. Across the two days of virtual parallel sessions, I was able to learn about a vast array of topics\u2014ranging from AI-driven decision systems and predictive business analytics to operational engineering in diverse industries. Seeing the meaningful real-world results and creative methodologies presented by fellow researchers gave me fresh inspiration and expanded my understanding of how data science can drive sustainable efficiency. The interactive Q&A sessions provided constructive feedback and thought-provoking questions that will undoubtedly help refine our future research directions.<\/p>\n

    This journey at ICTIM 2026 reminded me of the true essence of academic research: continuous learning, resilience through iteration, and a commitment to solving real-world challenges. I am deeply grateful to my supervisor and co-author, my peers, the observed clinic staff who supported with data collection, and the ICTIM 2026 organizing committee at BINUS Online for providing such a wonderful platform.
